Hudson Valley

Less than an hour’s drive from Manhattan, the Hudson Valley is known for quaint riverside villages, palatial historic homes, farm-fresh cuisine, and hauntingly beautiful landscapes that have inspired generations of artists, writers and statesmen.

This region’s magnificent landscapes have inspired generations of artists, writers and statesmen. Just north of Manhattan, beside the majestic Hudson River, discover palatial historic homes, quaint riverside villages and celebrated farm-fresh cuisine.

Washington Irving set many of his stories here, including the classic Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Visit Sunnyside, his charming 19th-century cottage in Tarrytown. Many other historic homes offer tours, including the Vanderbilt Mansion and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s home in Hyde Park, the Rockefeller estate, and Boscobel House & Gardens—a grand estate overlooking the US Military Academy at West Point. Boscobel’s renowned Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival attracts over 30,000 fans every summer.

With some twenty theaters, the region offers many great performances. In Katonah, the Caramoor Center for Music & the Arts presents acclaimed music—from classical to operato jazz—in an enchanting garden setting. You can walk amid landscapes that inspired the Hudson River School paintings at Olana, Frederic Church’s splendid estate, or amid 120 monumental sculptures at the open-air Storm King Art Center.

Shop for unique regional art and crafts at Sugar Loaf Village. Galleries and shops also line the main streets of towns like Cold Spring, Nyack, Rhinebeck and Hudson, known for some of the nation’s best antique hunting. Watch old-fashioned, madcap air shows at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, home of one of the world’s largest collections of historic bi-planes. In Central Valley, Woodbury Common boasts the world’s largest collection of designer outlets.

You’ll definitely eat well in the Hudson Valley—from legendary country inns to the world famous Culinary Institute of America. Or go to the source and visit the region’s abundant farm markets, artisanal cheese makers, and award-winning wineries.
