Chautauqua-Allegheny

Chautauqua-Allegheny’s tranquil landscapes include “enchanted” mountains, picturesque waterways, and truly unique attractions.

This region’s charms have delighted vacationers for over a century. Timeless landscapes—“enchanted” mountains, picturesque waterways and bountiful vineyards—offer old-fashioned pleasures like fishing in the Genesee River, biking along country roads, and swimming in pristine lakes. For wilder fun, ride the new Mountain Coaster at Holiday Valley’s adventure park or swirl past rugged cliffs and waterfalls, whitewater rafting in the Zoar Valley.

The 65,000-acre Allegany State Park has sandy beaches, bike and bridle paths, boat launches and some fine old fishing holes, as well as hundreds of cabins and campsites. Midway State Park on Chautauqua Lake features one of the nation’s oldest amusement parks, along with scenic picnic grounds, fishing, and free docking for day visitors. For a spectacular view, pitch your tent on the high bluffs at Lake Erie State Park.

Hike amid amazing 80-foot-high rock formations at Rock City Park. Or follow nature trails that meander around 250 monumental sculptures at Griffis Sculpture Park, a 400-acre preserve. Stroll along tree-lined lanes in a Victorian village at the Chautauqua Institution, featuring a summer season of world-class performances including Grammy-winner Pablo Ziegler’s Classical Tango Quartet and the amazing Golden Dragon Acrobats. Jamestown, Lucille Ball’s hometown, welcomes visitors from around the world to the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center that highlights America’s First Couple of Comedy.

This region is full of homegrown flavor. Roadside stands and farm markets offer sweet corn, berries, apples, cheeses and tons of grapes. The Chautauqua/Lake Erie Wine Trail features 23 wineries. Follow New York’s Amish Trail to more than 100 shops with hand-crafted furniture, quilts and baked goods. And remember, this is western New York. Whoop it up at the annual Ellicottville Rodeo in July or the Gerry Rodeo in August!
