Recreational Cycling Holidays

For those that like to experience the world passing slowly by, then hopping onto two-wheels and using pedal power to discover New York State is a fantastic option.  The state offers a wonderful choice of recreational cycling, so whether you’re looking for stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, National Parks or simply to meander alongside a river or two – take your pick from the following suggestions:

The Finger Lakes region is ideal for cyclists who want to circle the lakes and stop off at one of the many wineries along the way. The scenic lake loops around several of the larger Finger Lakes, such as the 100-mile loop around Cayuga Lake and the 40-mile loop around Skaneateles Lake; both are very popular routes and the scenery is breathtaking.

Thousands of miles of bicycle trails wind through the Adirondacks, around the Lake Champlain Valley and along the St. Lawrence Seaway in far upstate New York. a scenic road route, runs 450 miles from Massena to Niagara Falls and runs along the south shore of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

For cycle routes that lead to sandy beaches and the cool waters of the Atlantic, head east of Manhattan to Long Islandwhere you'll find parks with specially paved paths to seaside boardwalks with dedicated lanes just for bicycling, and plenty of fresh sea air!

The New York State Canal System, comprises more than 230 miles of trails across upstate New York. Multiuse trails found in the State include the 25-mile Hudson-Mohawk Bikeway in the Capital-Saratoga region, the 36-mile Old Erie Canal State Park in central New York, the 90-mile Erie Canal Heritage Trail in the northern Finger Lakes region, and the 8-mile Glens Falls Feeder Canal Trail in the foothills of the Adirondacks near Lake Champlain.

The Hudson Valley has moderate hills, Hudson River views, farm landscapes, and the allure of historic estates such as those in Hyde Park.

For excellent off-trail riding, head to the Catskill Mountain region - hardcore cyclists can try the 113-mile Reservoir Loop and Plattenkill Mountain is one of the top five mountain-biking destinations in North America. Mountains such as Windham and Hunter cater to mountain bikers in summer in the Catskills Region.
