Special Places to Stay

Their home is now your castle, complete with the royal treatment. FScott Fitzgerald used Oheka Castle as inspiration for The Great Gatsby. Today, the former country home of Otto Kahn overlooking the Long Island Sound is a hip boutique hotel with glorious gardens and fountains worthy of the glam movies shot there.

Castle on the Hudson, 30 minutes from New York City and featuring views of the city skyline, still feels like the private home it was built to be. The food is as appealing as the beautiful Tapestry and Gardens rooms where it is served.

Ships bound for the Great Lakes pass right by the Royal Suite at Singer Castle, on a private island in the Thousand Islands-Seaway region. Guests in the two-bedroom suite, which takes up an entire wing of the castle, have the place to themselves after 5pm, when public tours are finished. The medieval castle, modelled after the one in a book by Sir Walter Scott, has dramatic views of Canadian sunsets and American sunrises.

The Tower Suite is the room of choice at Belhurst Castle on Seneca Lake. The former residence, now part of a resort with its own vineyard, is a gem of the Finger Lakes wine region.
